US-Iran Nuclear Dialogue Begins in Oman with First Encounter Between Trump Envoy and Iranian Foreign Minister

0

Oman — April 2025:

The long-anticipated nuclear discussions between the United States and Iran commenced on Saturday in Oman, marking the first direct encounter between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and White House Envoy Steve Witkoff since President Trump returned to office.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the brief meeting between the two top diplomats took place outside the venue where indirect talks were being held, facilitated by Omani mediators.

Why It Matters

President Trump has consistently stated that Iran must urgently agree to a nuclear deal that ensures it cannot obtain a nuclear weapon—or risk potential military action. The talks in Oman represent a significant move in addressing one of the most sensitive geopolitical tensions in the region.

Backdrop of the Talks

  • The encounter between Araghchi and Witkoff marks the first direct US-Iran interaction in this context since the Trump administration resumed power.
  • Talks are being held indirectly, with both delegations placed in separate rooms, as confirmed by Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
  • Araghchi told Iranian state TV that four message exchanges were facilitated by the Omani hosts during Saturday’s meeting.

Diplomatic Positioning

Both US and Iranian officials expressed cautious optimism, stating that the primary objective was to assess each other’s seriousness in pursuing a viable agreement.

“Our goal is to reach a just and respectful agreement on equal footing,” Araghchi said ahead of the talks. “If the other side adopts a similar approach, this could open the door to future negotiations.”

The Iranian foreign minister also emphasized Iran’s intention to establish a timeline for formal nuclear negotiations.

Regional Mediation and Tone

The Omani Foreign Minister described the atmosphere of the discussions as "friendly and constructive," adding that the exchanges aimed to bridge differences and support peace, stability, and security at regional and global levels.

“We will continue to work together and increase efforts to help reach this shared goal,” he said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

What's Next?

  • The initial session lasted approximately two and a half hours.
  • The next round of indirect talks is scheduled to take place next Saturday in Oman, signaling a continued diplomatic effort.
  • Araghchi reaffirmed that both parties are keen on swift and meaningful dialogue, stating:

“Neither side wants discussions that waste time or lead to dead ends. We both seek a solution in the shortest possible timeframe.”
