Sylvester
Turner, a beloved Houston leader who recently won a seat in Congress, passed
away at his Washington, D.C., home on Wednesday morning at age 70. His family
said he died after years of health struggles, including a battle with bone
cancer. Turner’s death came just months after he was elected to represent
Texas’ 18th Congressional District, continuing a lifetime of public
service.
A
Lifetime of Service
Turner grew
up in Houston’s Acres Homes neighborhood and became one of the city’s most
influential leaders. He spent 27 years in the Texas Legislature (1989–2016)
fighting for education, healthcare, and social justice. As Houston’s mayor from
2016 to 2024, he led the city through major crises like Hurricane Harvey and
the COVID-19 pandemic. He also launched programs to fix Houston’s streets,
reduce flooding, and improve road safety for walkers and cyclists.
Battling
Cancer and Returning to Politics
In 2022,
Turner revealed he had been diagnosed with bone cancer after a routine dental
visit. He beat the disease that year but faced ongoing health issues. After
briefly retiring, he returned to politics in 2023 to run for Congress following
the death of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. Turner campaigned on issues like
police reform, hurricane recovery aid, and lowering living costs.
Mixed
Legacy and Heartfelt Tributes
Turner’s
time as mayor wasn’t without conflict. He clashed with Houston firefighters
over pay disputes, though the union later acknowledged his decades of service.
Leaders across Texas praised Turner as a “transformational” figure who cared
deeply for Houston.
“He was Houston through and through,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. “He believed in unity and worked tirelessly for his community.”
Houston Mayor John Whitmire called Turner irreplaceable: “No one can fill his shoes. He pushed everyone around him to be better.”
Harris
County Judge Lina Hidalgo, a close friend, remembered Turner as a trailblazer:
“We often talked about how two kids from humble beginnings—him from Acres
Homes, me an immigrant—could lead this city and county. I loved him dearly.”
A Lasting
Impact
Turner’s
work—from rebuilding after disasters to advocating for safer streets—left a
lasting mark on Houston. He will be remembered as a passionate leader who
dedicated nearly 40 years to improving lives in his hometown and beyond.
