Many people are remembering Austin Metcalf, a 17-year-old student from Frisco Memorial High School, who was fatally stabbed on Wednesday at a school track meet. Friends, family, and even strangers are sharing their thoughts and prayers on social media.
Austin’s last Instagram post, made 27 weeks ago, showed him playing football. He captioned it "My space," and in a video from the same post, he celebrated his team’s victory by making a "W" hand sign at the stadium. By Thursday morning, the post had received more than 1,700 likes and 650 comments, with many people wishing him rest in peace.
Austin was a talented student and athlete. He was voted MVP of his football team, ran track, and had a 4.0 GPA, according to his father.
Police arrested another 17-year-old student, Karmelo Anthony, for Austin’s death. He is charged with murder and is a student at Centennial High School.
After the tragic incident, Austin’s name started trending online. His social media posts were flooded with messages of love and condolences. His family started a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses.
On Wednesday night, Hope Fellowship Church in Frisco held a prayer vigil in his honor.
Jalaal Abdullah, one of Austin’s football teammates, called him "a true inspiration" on Instagram. He said Austin helped bring out the best in everyone and had a big impact on his life.
Texas state Representative Jared Patterson said he and his wife were heartbroken over Austin’s death. He called Austin "one of the best" students in Frisco ISD and prayed for peace in the community.
Austin’s last post on X (formerly Twitter), made just days before the stabbing, also received many comments. It read, "Faith that God got me ❤️ and my work will pay off."
One person replied, "May God be with you and watch over your family and friends." Another commented, "The Lord will hold you in HIS ALMIGHTY ARMS!"
Many people continue to mourn Austin, remembering him as a bright and hardworking young man.
