Chamberlain first became famous in the 1960s for his role as Dr. Kildare in the TV series of the same name. The show aired from 1961 to 1966, and in 1963, he won a Golden Globe for Best Male TV Star. In a 2021 interview, he recalled how the show quickly became popular worldwide, fulfilling his dream of acting success.
Beyond television, Chamberlain also had a successful movie career. He starred in the 1970 film Julius Caesar, The Three Musketeers (1973), and the Oscar-winning The Towering Inferno (1974).
In the 1980s, Chamberlain became known as the "King of Miniseries" for his lead roles in Shōgun (1980) and The Thorn Birds (1983), both of which won him Golden Globe Awards. He later reprised his role as Father Ralph in The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years (1996).
He also played Jason Bourne in the first adaptation of The Bourne Identity in 1988 and continued acting in TV and film throughout the 1990s and 2000s, making guest appearances in shows like Will & Grace, The Drew Carey Show, and Desperate Housewives. His last acting credit was the 2019 film Finding Julia.

Besides acting, Chamberlain had a brief career as a singer and appeared in stage productions like My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Born in Los Angeles, Chamberlain grew up in Beverly Hills and later earned a bachelor’s degree in arts from Pomona College. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army for 16 months in Korea, reaching the rank of sergeant.
Chamberlain is survived by his longtime partner, Martin Rabbett. In a statement, Rabbett expressed his grief, saying, "Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us."
